Depression and Food: The Link

A recent trial was carried out and can be seen in the Journal Of Biological Psychiatry, to test whether individual food allergies could really produce mental symptoms. The results showed that allergies were able to produce, severe depression ,nervousness, lack of motivation and mental blackness.

The foods that produced the most symptoms were wheat, eggs, milk and sugar. Our Food and Mood Nutritional Test will test for all of these foods and more.

The Molecules of Emotion are Serotonin, which influences your mood and Adrenalin/nor adrenalin which makes Dopamine this influences your motivation. Women are 3 x more prone to low moods as men, mainly due to low serotonin, associated with both anxiety and depression. We know that Omega 3 helps serotonin and dopamine uptake,as well as the 'B' Vitamins,Vitamin C,Zinc etc all help Tryptophan, which helps improve your mood.

Our Food and Mood Nutritional Scan may identify any imbalances or deficiencies in these nutrients.

If you really want to eat your way to happiness the key is to follow a diet that keeps your blood sugar balanced and provides plenty of Tryptophan, 'B' Vitamins and Omega 3. If you have deficiencies in any of those, these will show up in the test.

Brain Pollution

In the last 50 years 3500 new chemicals have been added to food and a further 3000 have been introduced into our homes. Heavy metals like lead and cadmium are commonplace in our environment, so that the average person has body levels 700 x times higher than those of our ancestors.

Most of the food is sprayed with pesticides, insecticides and herbicides; up to a gallon of them have been sprayed on our fruit and vegetables and are consumed by every person in a year.

What we do know is that these cocktail of poisons, metals, food additives have distorted effects on our behaviour, high intakes have been associated with mood swings, aggressive behaviour, brain fog, depression, fatigue, insomnia and impaired memory.

This is why we scan for all food additives, metals and chemicals, as its these items that have major effects on our mental health and wellbeing.

Memory and Nutrition

  • Is your Memory deteriorating ?
  • Do you find it hard to concentrate?
  • Do you ever go looking for something and forget what you are looking for?
  • Do you find that it is harder to remember things now?
  • Do you experience mental tiredness and brain fog?

In a recent survey in Britain, the fear of developing Alzheimer’s overtook the fear of developing cancer for the first time. This increased fear is a direct consequence of many more stories in the media, and even movies about Alzheimer’s.

Most people also know someone who has, or has died from, Alzheimer’s and know it’s not a pretty sight. It’s extremely worrying, in fact. We are living longer and the odds of developing dementia in your 80s, most of which is Alzheimer’s anyway, are one in five. (Dementia is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms – losing your memory etc; Alzheimer’s is diagnosed with a brain scan showing brain shrinkage in certain key areas.)

With an ever ageing population, at least in the Western world, one in five is a lot of people. Already the cost of looking after people with Alzheimer’s, estimated at £23 billion and growing, is more than the cost of all cancer and heart disease combined. These levels of ever increasing healthcare costs are giving health regulators and economists sleepless nights.

The discovery made by Professor David Smith and his team at Oxford University is that raised blood levels of homocysteine can predict Alzheimer’s risk, can cause the damage in the brain and, most importantly, can be lowered with high doses of B vitamins well beyond the RDA, simultaneously stopping further memory loss or accelerated brain shrinkage precisely in that area of the brain that is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s.

Food & Mood Nutritional Screening . Childrens_Allergy_001

Learning Difficulties and Food Allergies (ADD ADHD,Autism Spectrum Disorders)

As many as one in five adults and children - and probably one in three with behavioural problems - react allergically to common foods such as milk, wheat, yeast and eggs. The fact that allergy to foods and chemicals can adversely affect moods and behaviour in children has been known, for a very long time.

Research in the 1980's, confirmed by recent double blind controlled trials, have found that allergies can affect any system of the body, including the central nervous system. They can cause a diverse range of symptoms including fatigue, slowed thought processes, irritability, agitation, aggressive behaviour, nervousness, anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, hyperactivity and learning disabilities.

In her book No More Ritalin, Dr Block gives samples of handwriting before and after a child is given a suspected food allergen. Before, the child's name is written perfectly, but after the allergen is ingested his name is written in mirror image.

Vitamins and Minerals

These are your brain's best friends! One of the main roles of vitamins and minerals is to help turn turn glucose into energy, amino acids into neurotransmitters and simple essential fats into more complex fats like GLA and DHA. Vitamins and minerals help build and rebuild the brain and nervous system and keep everything running smoothly.

B Vitamins

The B Complex group of vitamins is vital for mental health, deficiency of any one B Vitamin's will rapidly affect how you think and feel. This is because they are water soluble and easy pass out of the body,so we need a regular intake throughout the day. Also because the brain uses large amounts of these nutrients,a short term deficiency will affect mental abilities. People low in this vitamin have poor attention spans and concentration. At our Clinic we see that nearly everyone has a number of B Vitamin deficiencies, so it's worth while getting tested.

Understanding Methylation and the Brain

One of the most important processes in the brain and body is called methylation. Methylation keeps all those hormones, essential bio chemicals and neurotransmitters in balance, believe it or not there are billions of methylation reactions every second !!! If you need to react quickly and there is a fire in the house, your body will be producing adrenalin quickly,it helps get you going, but all of this would not happen without methylation.

Faulty Methylation is linked to a number of mental states and conditions, mainly it can predict memory loss, depression, and much more. To find out about how your body and brain is methylating or not is to test for homocysteine. At ALLERGY TESTING UK we find that most people who are lacking in the brain nutrient Trimethlyglycine may show low levels of homocysteine, that is why we always check and test for this nutrient.
